Sociology Position Description /Advertisement
The Department of Sociology, History, & Political Science at Indiana University Kokomo invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, 10 month, Assistant Professor of Sociology to begin in August 2012. Information about the department and sociology programs may be found at http://www.iuk.edu. Candidates must be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in sociology (in the Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies Program) as well as support our newly developed track within the sociology program in Applied Sociology/Human or Social Services. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in sociology although ABD’s who are within two years degree completion will be considered. ABDs will have until November of the second year to earn the doctorate. Candidates are expected to be effective teachers as well as active researchers. Appropriate university/professional/community service is also required including committee work, assessment of the major, and engaging in campus initiatives to increase retention and enrollment. Evidence of effective teaching, publications, and record of service will be required for tenure and promotion. Candidates should be able to teach research methods for the major as well as introductory sociology. Candidates who have experience preparing students to work in social service agencies and/or who can assist in the development of an applied research center conducting evaluation research for local social/human service agencies with student researchers are needed. Other areas of specialty needed to complement our existing curriculum include program evaluation, medical sociology, drugs and society, stratification, power, and/or work and occupations.
Applicants with these qualifications should submit a cover letter to the search committee which addresses the above qualifications, curriculum vitae, university transcripts of undergraduate and graduate degrees, a research statement outlining research goals, a sample publication or paper, a teaching statement or philosophy, and evidence of excellence in teaching. Three letters of reference must also be included or arrive under separate cover.
